Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow in Professional and Civic Writing

Susquehanna University

About Susquehanna:

Susquehanna University is the future-ready institution for today, invested in cultivating intellectual grounding, active learning and global citizenship for all students. Renowned as one of the finest U.S. national liberal arts colleges, Susquehanna inspires and challenges 2,200 enterprising, bright-minded students studying the arts, business, humanities and sciences. Our students seize opportunities through exceptional worldwide internships, expert-guided research and an acclaimed study-abroad program, leading to a transformative education that empowers each graduate to realize their unique potential and lead a successful and meaningful life.

The Susquehanna River Valley with its fresh air and overall pleasant year-round climate, provides four distinct seasons amidst a backdrop of vibrant autumn foliage, occasional winter snowfalls, flower-filled springs and warm summer evenings illuminated by fireflies. Nearby outdoor recreational areas for hiking, kayaking, fishing and skiing - and the bustling cultural and commerce hubs of New York City, Washington D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia within a three-hour drive - present abundant opportunities for learning and discovery.

Position Summary:

Susquehanna University invites applications for a postdoctoral teaching fellow for Spring 2025 (preferably beginning by January 15th with conclusion of Spring duties by June 30th). Funding is secured through Spring 2027, with annual reappointment contingent on performance throughout this period. Review of applications begins December 11. We seek a partner to help us expand the classes and programming for our new Professional and Civic Writing major. Teaching responsibilities are five classes per year (3 Fall/ 2 Spring), including first-year writing courses (on topics of the faculty member's choice) capped at 16, a sophomore level central curriculum humanities course (open topic) capped at 30, and professional and public writing courses capped at 20. This position includes some advising responsibilities after the first semester. There are departmental committee and recruiting responsibilities, but no required university service and no research commitments, although we will support scholarship through mentoring and travel funding if the post-doc chooses to pursue it.

This position offers broad opportunities for professional development: a year-long university-wide mentoring program, mentoring by a senior colleague within the department, funding for conference travel, and opportunities to develop teaching experience and curricular innovation.

This fellowship is supported by a Mellon Foundation grant which explores the topic of democratic ethos, considering the question, what are the cultural (humanities and arts based) preconditions of a flourishing democratic culture? In addition to the development of the major, the grant supports the development of a certificate program for community members and central-curriculum classes across Arts and Humanities. The Fellow will work with the Principal Investigator and the Co-Principal Investigator to develop new courses for this major and certificate, including at least two of the following or some alternatives as agreed upon by the partners and guided by the candidate's expertise and interests: grant writing, community partnership writing, and digital writing. This work is supported by administrative release time, reducing the Fellow's teaching responsibilities from 6 classes a year to 5. We are interested in exploring the ways professional and civic writing promote (or erode) foundational elements of democracy such as reciprocity, inclusivity, and deliberation; all of the courses in the professional and civic writing major and the central curriculum classes taught by the post-doc will address one or more of these or related issues.

Required Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in a related field is required by August 2025.

Preferred Qualifications:

Teaching experience in professional writing, public writing, or technical writing; first year writing; introductory literature. Doctorate in rhetoric or doctorate in a related field with specialization in rhetoric.

Special Instructions to the Applicant:

To apply, please submit online at https://jobs.susqu.edu/ a cover letter and c.v. The online application form will also require contact information for 3 references. Any inquiries should be sent to the department co-chair, Dr. Betsy Verhoeven (verhoeven@susqu.edu). Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
