The Role
Applied BioSciences is currently seeking a suitably qualified Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join a multi-disciplinary team. The project aims to develop knowledge required to support the establishment of sterile insect technique (SIT) for management of insect pests of agriculture in Australia. The primary role of the position is to assess the performance of insect strains and the impacts of operational practises on insect quality through the deployment of standard quality control procedures as well as biologically relevant assays of behaviour and physiology.
The successful applicant will work with Professor Phil Taylor (Macquarie) and Dr Maarten Van Helden (SARDI) to:
Implement standard UN-FAO/IAEA quality control procedures to assess baseline production quality of sterile insects;
Implement, and as needed develop, non-standard approaches to assess biological performance of reared insects especially in relation to sexual and ecological competence;
Refine operational practises for SIT to improve quality of released sterile insects.
About You
You will have completed a PhD in Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences, or a related discipline. You will enjoy bringing impactful research outcomes and working effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary research team. Your collaborative approach to working with others will ensure you perform effectively within a multi-disciplinary environment. Essential
PhD in Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences, or related discipline, with emphasis on application;
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills;
Ability to work collaboratively and work independently without close supervision;
Relevant experience with assessment, quantification and analysis of insect performance;
Ability to devise and implement a wide range of ecologically relevant tests of behavioural and physiological performance;
Experienced at generating practical pest management solutions through basic science;
Desirable
Experienced with sterile insect technique release programs;
Experienced with sterile insect mass rearing programs;
Familiarity with literature related to assessment of sexual and ecological competence.
