Research Fellow In Plant Development And Plant Stress

University Of Leeds

Description

Research Fellow in Plant Development and Plant Stress

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have an established background in abiotic and biotic stresses in plants?

You will work with Dr Laura Carter, a UKRI Future Leaders Fellow, on the research project Contaminants of emerging concern in agricultural systems: a risk to soil-plant systems?, funded by UK Research and Innovation. The use of sustainable agricultural practices such as treated wastewater irrigation and organic soil amendments are inadvertently introducing emerging contaminants to our agro-ecosystems. It is therefore essential that we can quantify the risks associated with introducing bioactive chemicals into soil-plant systems, given that these practices are set to increase in response to depleting freshwater supplies and a drive to move away from chemical-based fertilisers.

This project will explore how a subset of emerging contaminants, pharmaceuticals, can affect plant growth and development. Early work by our research group has demonstrated that pharmaceuticals can effect plant hormone concentrations and nutrient composition of crops at environmentally relevant soil concentrations. Through a combination of laboratory and field scale investigations at the University of Leeds Farm, outcomes of this work will offer a paradigm shift in how we consider the risks of emerging contaminants in the environment by combining expertise in the fields of agriculture, soil, and plant health. The proposed mechanistic driven evaluation will allow us to understand potential impacts on crop productivity and our ability to meet growing food demands. This project will link with on-going work to explore the fate of emerging contaminants in soil-plant systems.

We are looking for an enthusiastic Post-Doctoral researcher with a background in plant responses to join our team in the University of Leeds to design and undertake a programme of research that evaluates the effects of land-applied pharmaceuticals on plant growth and development.

You should have a PhD (or be very close to obtaining a PhD) in Environmental Science, Agricultural Science, Plant Physiology or Environmental Biology – or a related discipline with a significant component of plant effects analysis – and be able to demonstrate a combination of enthusiasm and expertise in understanding how soil pollutants can impact on plant development.
