University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Postdoctoral Research Associate - Lorenzo Lab
Vacancy ID: PDS003189 Department: Cell Biology and Physiology – 422001 Salary Range: Dependent on Qualifications/Experience
The Department of Cell Biology and Physiology is a broad and interdisciplinary basic science department in the School of Medicine at UNC-CH. As a top-ranked, nationally-recognized leader in basic science research, our faculty and staff are engaged in innovative and cutting-edge research in the areas of neuroscience, cardiovascular biology, cellular cytoskeleton, cell motility and imaging. The Department has over 50 faculty engaged in basic science research, education and national service. Many faculty and their laboratories provide training for undergraduate and postgraduate trainees in the biomedical sciences.
Our lab studies the role of cytoskeleton-associated proteins in brain development, connectivity, and associated mechanisms leading to neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders. We are seeking a motived postdoctoral fellow to study molecular mechanisms of neurodevelopment linked to autism and epilepsy using cellular (primary neuronal cultures, patient iPSCs-derived neurons), multiomics (RNA-seq, proteomics), histological (brain slices, immunohistochemistry), biochemical, multi-imaging modalities, electrophysiology and mouse behavioral approaches. The postdoctoral fellow will also help establishing cellular systems for CRISPR-based screens to identify druggable genetic modifiers and participate in follow-up data analysis and assessment of targets.
Educational Requirements Candidate must possess a PhD (and/or MD) and less than two years of prior post-doctoral experience.
Qualifications and Experience Position requires generating and working with mouse and cellular models of neurodevelopmental disorders including autism, behavioral experiments, studies of brain connectivity changes using reporter lines and brain injections, immunohistochemistry analysis, western blot, genomics (RNA-seq), proteomics, electrophysiology.
Solid background in biochemistry and cell/molecular biology, and a strong interest in research, as well as excellent analytical, and oral and written communication skills. Applicant must possess good problem solving and organizational skills and should also demonstrate the ability to independently design and conduct experiments, complete research projects, and work effectively in a team. The position requires extensive experience in genome editing, histological and microscopic analysis, live imaging, and establishment of primary neuronal cultures. Candidate should have expertise in studying brain development in mouse lines, as well as transcriptomics analyses. Prior experience with brain electroporation, stereotaxic surgery, electrophysiology, and mouse or human stem cell culture is especially desirable.
