Postdoctoral Fellows in Molecular Immunology and Infection Biology : Vienna, Austria
The Bergthaler laboratory at the CeMM Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna, Austria is looking for two Postdoctoral Fellows who strive to study fundamental molecular questions in the areas of viral infections, inflammation and immunity. Data-driven and hypothesis-driven approaches are integrated to address pertinent pathophysiological questions on the organ/organism level (Ref: e.g. Schliehe C et al. Nature Immunology 2015 (PMID: 25419628), Bhattacharya A et al. Immunity 2015 (PMID: 26588782), Khamina K et al. PLoS Pathogens 2017 (PMID: 292618079)).
The Projects:
Project 1: Metabolite-driven inflammation in viral hepatitis.
Metabolic-inflammatory hubs that modulate antiviral CD8 T cells and liver pathology will be studied on the tissue level. Coupled to latest technologies (CRISPR screens, single cell sequencing, metabolomics, flux measurements), we expect new insights into the crosstalk between metabolism and inflammation in vivo. This may open avenues to tailor immunological responses and ameliorate tissue pathology.
Project 2: Impact of chromatin-associated proteins in inflammation.
The role of chromatin-related proteins in cytokine-mediated immunoregulation will be investigated in models of infectious and sterile inflammation. Newly generated gene-targeted mouse models and immunological and virological assays will be integrated with systems-level approaches (ChIP-seq, RNA-seq) to identify novel mechanisms of immunoregulation in infection and autoimmunity.
Both projects will benefit from established in vivo disease models, unpublished data and reagents, strong bioinformatics support, access to world class core facilities (next-generation sequencing, metabolomics, proteomics, drug screens) and a vibrant collaborative network with international leading scientists.
Your Profile:
- PhD in a relevant field (e.g. Molecular Biology, Immunology, Virology, Genomics, Epigenetics, Tissue
- Biology, Computational Biology, Technology Development).
- Alternatively, you have a MD/DVM degree and strong interests in mechanistic molecular research.
- Strong publication track record with at least one first-author paper in a reputated peer-reviewed journal.
- Expertise in molecular biology, immunology and animal models.
- Additional skill sets (e.g. histology, screening assays, data analysis, modeling) are welcomed assets.
- Critical, creative and proactive mindset.
- Team player with strong interdisciplinary communication skills.
The PI:
Dr. Andreas Bergthaler received training in premier laboratories at the University/ETH Zurich, University of Tokyo and at the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle. His team currently consists of 10 members representing 6 nationalities, who closely collaborate across projects. The lab is funded by intramural funds from the Austrian Academy of Sciences and competitive grants (European Research Council (ERC), Austrian Science Fund (FWF)).
