Full time starting salary is normally in the range £31,406 to £40,927, with potential progression once in post to £43,434

Role Purpose

To create and contribute to the creation of knowledge by undertaking a specified range of activities within the group research areas and projects specifically related to the improvement of energy efficiency. The Knowledge Exchange Fellow will engage with businesses in the Energy sector to establish collaborative research aiming to improve relevant technologies.

The position will be based with Professor Athanasios Tsolakis at the University of Birmingham, and work on the ATETA project which engages and supports Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) in the Greater Birmingham and Solihull, Black Country and Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership areas. A key part of this role is to contribute to regional energy sector growth by providing support to a range of businesses under the ATETA project. ATETA is £5.7M business support project promoting decarbonisation of power, generation, heating, cooling and transportation.

This post will be part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

Scope of The Role

• Work within specified research grants and projects and contribute to writing bids • Support regional SMEs via the ATETA Business Engagement Team by providing technical support and consultancy towards decarbonising their energy technologies • Operate within the energy theme in the areas of low carbon fuels, combustion and environmental catalysts. • Analyse and interpret research findings and results • Contribute to generating funding • Contribute to licensing or spin out deals with demonstrated commercial success (such as revenues, asset or company sales, IP generated) and/or public understanding of the discipline or similar

Main Duties

The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below.

• Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required • Contribute to writing bids for research funding • Analyse and interpret data • Work with the ATETA Business Engagement team and Project Manager to scope and complete SME projects • Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding • Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc • Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD/MSc students where appropriate to the discipline • Contribute to developing new models, techniques, experimental facilities, equipment and methods • Undertake management/administration arising  from research • Contribute to Departmental/School research-related activities and research- related administration • Contribute to enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader • Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as scientific experimentation, literature reviews, and research interviews • Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters • Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research • Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines

Person Specification

• First degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering and a higher degree or near completion of PhD degree in Engineering in the areas of thermodynamics, combustion, energy carriers, fuels or equivalent qualifications • High level of analytical capability • Ability to communicate complex information clearly • Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
