About the team/job
We are recruiting for 2 core funded Postdoctoral Fellow positions in broad areas of evolutionary systems biology; proteomic based study of phosphorylation/ubiquitin signalling or genotype-to-phenotype analysis.
Our group is generally interested in studying how genetic variation gives rise to phenotypic differences via changes in the biology of the cell. Within this broad scope, we have a line of research focused on integrating different variant effect predictors (www.mutfunc.com), Wagih et al. Mol Sys Bio 2018) in order to interpret the molecular consequences that are intermediate between genotype and phenotype (Galardini et al. eLife 2017).
A second area of study in the group is our major interest in the study of phosphorylation signalling, where we make use of phosphoproteomic data to study: the evolution and functional relevance of phosphorylation (Studer et al. Science 2016, Ochoa et al. bioRxiv 2019), global kinase signalling systems and specificity, (Ochoa et al. Mol Sys Bio 2016; Bradley et al. bioRxiv 2018) and changes in kinase signalling in disease (Memon et al. bioRxiv 2019). We are also interested in applying several of these same ideas to the study of ubiquitin regulation. Finally, we have a growing interest in cancer genomics (Gonçalves et al. Cell Systems 2017) and understanding differences in gene deletion responses and drug responses in cancer cell lines, through collaboration with the DepMap consortium (http://depmap.org/sanger).
Your role
We welcome applicants with a PhD and an interest in contributing to any of the areas of research in the group (https://www.ebi.ac.uk/beltrao). We are primarily looking for applicants a very strong bioinformatics background but we will consider also candidates that are interested in combining experimental work with computational analysis.
You have
Considered applicants must hold a PhD in Life Sciences with experience in computational biology. We welcome applicants from diverse starting backgrounds in computational biology. Examples of backgrounds that could fit the group would be those with experience in: computational analysis of proteomics data; structural bioinformatics, drug target prediction and chemical-informatics; association genetics; evolution of regulatory elements; ancestral sequence/state reconstructions; and cancer genomics.
The post holder should enjoy working in a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary environment. Good written and oral communication skills are essential.
Informal enquiries about the post can be directed to pbeltrao@ebi.ac.uk
Why join us
At EMBL-EBI, we help scientists realise the potential of ‘big data’ in biology by enabling them to exploit complex information to make discoveries that benefit mankind. Working for EMBL-EBI gives you an opportunity to apply your skills and energy for the greater good. As part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), we are a non-profit, intergovernmental organisation funded by 22 member states and two associate member states. We are located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK, and our 600 staff are engineers, technicians, scientists and other professionals from all over the world.
EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation. The remuneration package comprises a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme and health insurance, educational and other family related benefits where applicable, as well as financial support for relocation and installation. For more information about pay and benefits click here
We have an informal culture, international working environment and excellent professional development opportunities but one of the really amazing things about us is the concentration of technical and scientific expertise – something you probably won’t find anywhere else.
If you’ve ever visited the campus you’ll have experienced first-hand our friendly, collegial and supportive atmosphere, set in the beautiful Cambridgeshire countryside. Our staff also enjoy excellent sports facilities including a gym, a free shuttle bus, an on-site nursery, cafés and restaurant and a library.
